Nicki's Cafe
Nicki has a wealth of stories amassed from his years in Regina.
Nicki started at the Erhle hotel as a dishwasher for 3 months. He moved to Chicago but it was too big for him so he returned to Saskatchewan. He bought a restaurant in Davidson for $5000 in 1970 and remained for 10 years. Around that time, at 23, he was in Greece and met his (then) 17 year old wife. They have 2 boys, an adopted girl from Romania, and will be married for 48 years. In 1980, he opened The Diplomat, a popular place for farmers, with his bother John. John liked the business aspect and Nicki liked to roll up his sleeves, so he added Nicki's Cafe. Now, he's one of the founders of "An Evening in Greece" which raises money for newborns at the hospital. He loves being in Canada and change a thing.
Every morning, he gets up at 4:30, gets a coffee from McDonald's, and goes for a walk around Wascana Park with his friend. He picks and eats dandelions, and makes his own olive oil.
He has met many people in his life, including prime minister Justin Trudeau, before he was the prime minister. He welcomes everyone, with the only requirement being to bring a good mood.
Nicki regaled us with stories from his travels. At 73 years old, he imparted the wisdom that we need to help each other out, and leave nothing for ourselves. If you get a chance to bump into him at his restaurant, you will be blown away by his charisma!
